LED Panels, screens, totems and Billboards for Digital Signage

LED Screen

LED signs are the biggest and most amazing signs we find around the world. Cities like New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo, and much more go for huge investments in large-area screens.

LED signs, billboards, walls, and totems are normally built using LED panels. LED Panels are generally what we use when we build large-area screens. They are durable, bright, and serviceable. LED panels come in many configurations, but in this support article, we're taking a closer look at how you can get them up and running with our software.

Step 1

LED screens are most commonly built using LED panels, and working with LED panels requires you to think a bit differently. you will be working with pixel ratio and not aspect ratio or resolution. Our experience is that the best result is achieved if you design your content using the same pixel ratio as your LED screen. (Example: If your LED screen is 512 pixels wide and 218 pixels high, then you need a playlist with the same pixel ratio.

The process of adding a Playlist for an LED screen is the same as any other screen except for a few things.

  • You can’t run a standard 16:9 playlist on an LED screen, so when you’re creating your playlist you need to open advanced and input your pixel ratio where it says 16:9. If the LED screen is 512 pixels wide and 218 pixels high, you input 512:218. You can read more on creating playlists with custom aspect ratios in our display zones guide.
  • You might need to adjust your screen edges to compensate for graphical translations. If the content is not centered on the LED screen open settings for the player and adjust the screen edges so that they fit perfectly. Depending on the setup you might need to input the pixel ratio in screen edges. Learn more about screen edges.

Step 2

It’s important that, when you create content, you keep all files as small as possible to minimize the load on your hardware. We recommend you resize all images and video, in this example, we would resize according to the height of the screen and add 20% (512:288 +25% = 640:360), meaning your image should be 640:360 or close to it. You can either do your resizing on your computer or directly in the editor, Learn more about cropping

Also keep in mind white is a no-go for larger areas of your content, you should always avoid white backgrounds and content with very light colors. The reason is that LEDs have a max. output when they are white and max. output is the same as high power consumption, high temperature, shortened lifespan, etc.

Are there any limitations in regard to size?

Not in any way, you can create a playlist as big as you'd want it, but keep in mind if you have a large area with high resolution (For example, 12000 x 9000 pixels), you need to make sure your media player can handle it.

Are there any specific media players you recommend for LED screens?

We don't like recommending specific brands or models, but for LED screens there are things you need to watch out for. Since most LED screens are placed outside, sometimes in cold states and sometimes in hot states, we recommend you find a media player that is purpose-built, meaning it's immune to moisture, dust, and cold and hot temperatures. Our best experiences with LED screen projects have been built on Windows OS media players.
