Version 2.1 brings our third RSS plugin: RSS Reader. You can now also search for feeds right in the editor; if a feed isn’t found, paste its address instead.
Which RSS plugin to use
- RSS Ticker scrolls the text of a feed across the screen, from right to left.
- Media RSS shows the images or videos from a Media RSS feed, mostly used by paid digital signage content providers.
- RSS Reader shows the text of each item in a normal RSS feed, with its picture if it has one. It can be any size and has plenty of settings.
Media RSS or RSS?
Both are XML, and both can hold pictures, so it’s easy to mix them up. News sites and blogs usually publish RSS; paid digital signage content is usually Media RSS.
RSS was never designed for media, so there’s no standard place for the picture. After testing many feeds, we found six different places to look for it, and sometimes there’s none. When there is one, it’s a thumbnail that goes with the text. Media RSS puts the media in one fixed place, makes it the main content, and tells the player how long to show each item.
Other updates
- Samsung Tizen displays: turn the Safety Lock, which disables the TV remote, on or off from the web portal.
- A sub-playlist can continue from the slide it showed last time.
- The Windows, Linux and Mac apps now use Chrome 89 (Electron 12).
