That $16 figure lines up with Play’s Ultimate-class public rate, not Essential. Play’s public plans are Essential, Pro, and Ultimate—roughly the $8 / $12 / $16 band depending on plan and discounts. Matching Yodeck Basic to Play Essential is fair. Matching Yodeck Basic to Play Ultimate is not.

Apples-to-apples: Yodeck Basic pairs with Play Essential (about $8); Yodeck Premium with Play Pro (about $12); Yodeck Enterprise with Play Ultimate (about $16). Annual prepay and volume discounts change both sides (Play documents about 10% off for annual).

Free-screen fine print: Yodeck can keep one Basic screen free forever, but their pricing docs say adding a second screen means all screens are billed. Play’s first screen can be free forever after an approved review within 30 days (Capterra, G2, Trustpilot, Google, Software Advice or GetApp) and confirmation via chat.

Storage: Yodeck’s comparison table implies Play lacks unlimited storage. Play’s pricing FAQ states there is no limit on storage or traffic—so a blank checkbox is not a product fact.

When “$8 Yodeck” stops being $8: on Yodeck’s own pricing matrix, advanced media scheduling, tag-based/sub-playlists, richer Microsoft 365/Google apps, SAML SSO, player/data encryption, custom roles, and audit-style governance typically sit on Premium or Enterprise—not Basic. If you need those, compare Premium to Pro and Enterprise to Ultimate.

Free annual players: Yodeck’s free Raspberry Pi-class player with annual plans is a real SMB perk (pre-configured Wi-Fi, case, HDMI, power). Weigh the annual lock, lighter vs stronger player SKUs for dashboards/web apps, and Fire Stick limits documented on Yodeck’s own Fire TV guide. Play does not ship a proprietary free Pi—you BYO Amazon Signage Stick, Fire TV, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, BrightSign, Tizen, webOS, and more without needing an annual hardware bundle to start.

Yodeck’s own support docs describe human live support as 24/5 (roughly Monday 06:00 EET through Saturday 06:00 EET). Weekends route to Yobot/AI with human follow-up when support resumes Monday. Phone hours are narrower than the full chat window, and paid accounts are prioritized over free. Enterprise packaging also highlights 24/5 support as a plan benefit.

In our testing, we could not reach a human on Yodeck’s live chat immediately and had to wait to be contacted. That is one experience, not a universal SLA—but it is why published hours matter more than “free remote support” headlines. Yodeck’s knowledge base and tutorials are solid for self-serve fixes. If you need a human on a US Saturday night, compare 24/5 EET coverage to Play’s 24/7 chat before you buy.

Yodeck strengths include free templates, stock media, drag-and-drop layout tools, cloud storage playlists (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive), and a Canva-oriented path. Many teams already design elsewhere and upload—that workflow is fine.

Play includes a cloud slide/page content editor so non-designers can build layouts with text, media, zones, and plugins (weather, social, Power BI, CAP, and more) without leaving the product. Yodeck is stronger as a layout + media + apps CMS; it is not the same as Play’s PowerPoint-like editor experience.

The fair claim is not “Yodeck has no editor.” It is: Yodeck emphasizes layouts, templates, and external design tools; Play emphasizes an all-in-one content editor plus playlists. If your designers live in Canva, either platform can work. If store managers need to edit slides themselves, try both workflows side by side.

Yodeck focuses on its Yodeck Media Player (Raspberry Pi-based) plus BrightSign, Android, Chrome/Edge web players, Tizen, and related commercial paths—strong for Pi-centric rollouts. Native Apple TV/macOS player coverage is a common gap in third-party comparisons; verify Yodeck’s current OS matrix if Mac editing or Mac players matter.

Play is built around bring-your-own hardware: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, Fire TV / Signage Stick, Chrome-based players, BrightSign, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, and more. That flexibility is the counter to “we give you a free player”—you are not steered into one annual Pi SKU to get started.

If you already standardized on Yodeck’s Pi players, switching later can mean retiring hardware that only made sense inside that bundle. If you want to mix Fire Sticks, Signage Sticks, mini PCs, and SoC TVs, Play’s compatibility story is usually simpler.

Yodeck allows unlimited users and workspace-style organization, but custom roles, richer hierarchy/workspaces, SSO, encryption, and audit-style controls are packaged toward Enterprise on Yodeck’s public pricing matrix—not the Basic “$8 alternative to Play” pitch.

Play treats multi-user access, roles, sub-teams, and sharing as core to multi-location accounts. Advanced security and insight features still scale by plan (Essential, Pro, and Ultimate), but you should not assume you must buy Yodeck Enterprise before teams are “real.”
